October Guide of the Month: Gabi

Gabi works as a Boston tour guide and an elementary school music teacher. Learn more about how he utilizes his talent for teaching with craft beer and music!

BEFORE YOU WORKED AT CITY BREW TOURS, WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING OR UNUSUAL JOB YOU’VE EVER HAD?

I had a few interesting jobs when I lived in Burlington, I was the music director/composer/arranger for the bawdy Spielpalast Cabaret for a couple of years and also the August First Bakery bread-biker, baking bread then riding around hooting, hollering, ringing bells to sell bread and pastries on the street.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN BOSTON? WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS CITY THAT YOU LOVE?

I’m a recent transplant to Boston, I’ve only been here since June. I’m loving being by the sea.

WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING YOU’RE WORKING ON OUTSIDE OF WORK RIGHT NOW?

Trying to become a trivia champ – I’m a sponge for podcasts and narrative non-fiction. Also developing an integrated arts program at the elementary school where I teach music, going into other classrooms to connect other subjects to music and the arts.

WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE TAKING A TOUR FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Take advantage! go get some extra tastings at the bar. There are a lot of stops where it is so hard for me to only pick 3 or 4 beers to serve.

WHAT BEER DRINKING SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE (PAIRINGS/GLASSWARE)?

Drop a shot of Art in the Age’s Root(root beer spirit) in a stout. The only vessel better than a goblet is a Kwak glass.

WHAT ARE THREE WORDS YOU WOULD USE TO DESCRIBE CITY BREW TOURS?

Wow! Hmmm, Yum!

WHAT’S THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?

The Joker

WHAT BEER IS IN YOUR FRIDGE/CELLAR RIGHT NOW?

In the fridge: Fermentary Form Gestalt & Lo-fi and as much Mystic as I can get my hands on before it’s gone 🙁
In the cellar: Cab Franc and Connemara peated Irish whiskey

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY?

It has made me a better music teacher – being a beer guide has made me more articulate and helped me guide social dynamics in my classroom. I also love chatting and connecting with people from all over the country/world and sharing the best aspects of Boston and hearing about the coolest parts of where the guests come from.
