Katie – Beer Guide

Tell us about yourself!
I was born and raised in Des Moines. I studied Vocal Performance and Korean for just under 3 years at the University of Iowa. I like singing, reading, gaming, and cooking!

Favorite beer(s)?
I like everything, really, but I have a special place in my heart for stouts.

What’s your favorite story from a City Brew Tour?
One time I had a public tour with people who didn’t know each other. Two of the guys on my tour kept talking about beer styles and brewing, and by the end of the tour they were exchanging numbers to keep in touch for a possible beer business partnership!

What do you love the most about your city’s beer scene?
Each place has a different vibe/feel to them. And the brewery staff at each place all seem to know each other, which is cool.

Why do you love being a Beer Guide?
Getting to connect with different people on tours. By the end of the tour you feel like a friend along for the ride.

If you were an animal, which animal would you be?
Land animal: Cat. Water animal: Great White Shark. Mythical animal: Dragon.

What’s an interesting fact about you?
I am a twin! We are fraternal and I am 4 minutes older (which I definitely used to my advantage growing up).

Zack – Beer Guide

Tell us about yourself!
I am a Finance student at Iowa State and aspiring entrepreneur. Outside of being a Beer Guide, I enjoy cooking, DJ’ing, staying active, and spending time outdoors.

Favorite beer(s)?
Octoberfest is in the top running of my favorite beers, but I also really enjoy Peace Tree’s Blonde Fatale and Exile’s Ruthie!

What do you love the most about your city’s beer scene?
I love how the Des Moines beer scene is very active within the community, and the extremely welcoming atmosphere!

Why do you love being a Beer Guide?
I love being a Beer Guide because I’m able to make connections with many new people including the community and beer staff. I also really enjoy constantly learning more about beer and building many valuable skills for myself!

What do you wish your city was more well-known for?
I wish Des Moines was more well-known for their hospitality.

If you could have a drink with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I could drink with anyone it would be my grandpa who passed away a little over a year ago. He was an extraordinary mentor and role model. He was hospitalized for about a year before he passed, so by the time I turned 21, I never got the chance to go have a drink with him.

What’s an interesting fact about you?
I have been in the Air National Guard for 5 years and joined almost right after I turned 17!
