New Magnolia Brewing Co., located in Houston’s historic Heights neighborhood, is a family-owned and operated brewery with deep roots in the city’s beer history. Founded in 2018 and brewed into existence in November 2019, New Magnolia pays homage to Houston’s original Magnolia Brewery, which operated from 1895 to 1935 on Buffalo Bayou. This connection to the past is at the heart of New Magnolia’s mission, as they aim to highlight the historical significance of Houston’s beer culture and its impact on the city’s early days. Their vision blends a respect for tradition with a dedication to delivering clean, balanced craft beers that offer patrons a truly unparalleled experience. On top of that, keep your eyes out for the amazing Belgan game they have at their brewery.

A little bit of the history behind New Magnolia’s name paying homage to Houston’s original Magnolia Brewery:

The Magnolia Brewery, established in February 1893 as part of the Houston Ice and Brewing Association, became a significant player in Houston’s beer industry. Founded by Hugh Hamilton and partners, the brewery’s grand opening took place in April 1893, producing popular beers like Southern Select. By 1895, the brewery was producing over 35,000 barrels annually. The Magnolia Brewery expanded in the early 1900s, adding new facilities and eventually becoming the largest brewery in the southern United States. However, Prohibition in 1920 led to its conversion into a dairy facility, and it never fully recovered after reopening attempts in the 1930s. Despite its closure, there are a few buildings at the intersection of Milam Street and Franklin Avenue represent a small portion of the Houston Ice and Brewing Company, which is a great way to remember the city’s oldest brewery operation. However, the complex was once vast, spanning twenty acres along the bayou and consisting of ten buildings.
