As the premier biergarten in Philadelphia, also voted best authentic German restaurant, Brauhaus Schmitz has really embodied the German culture and history of Philadelphia. Upon walking into this Deutsch wonderland, look above you and you’ll see a giant, back-lit version of The Reinheitsgebot (The German Beer Purity Law of 1516).  Let our expert guides give you a crash course in German as you learn about the world’s first consumer protection law. Owner Doug Hager was born in Aschaffenburg, Germany to native mother, and his father, there on duty in the U.S. Army. Drawing on his heritage Doug revived the city’s love affair with its ethnic German heritage, reintroducing a whole new generation of Philadelphians to the foods and brews of their forefathers. By cultivating close relationships with brewers during his visits to Germany, Hager procured 29 of his 30 taps from there, many of which are poured exclusively at Brauhaus, unable to be found among other taps in the city, state and even some cases the entire country. Most of his 100-bottle list is also imported directly from Germany, making this beer hall THE place to be for experiencing Philly’s deep Germanic legacy.  At Brauhaus Schmitz, expect to taste beers that you can only find here and in Germany… Sorry!
